After we recovered the salvage back to base, the first job was to strip the debris away from the frame and remove the engine. We needed to cut the rear chain off as it had become welded together. It became clear that any items within the vicinity of the magnesium alloy hubs had suffered worst due to the higher temperatures having been generated in those areas. So it was no great surprise to discover, on removal of the head and barrels  that the pistons had melted.

On closer inspection it became obvious that there was little we could salvage from the engine; the connecting rods were distorted, there was melted aluminum in the crankcase, the crankshaft was probably damaged; we may be able to use the camshaft and the gear clusters appeared to be O.K. As you can see from the picture, the cylinder head was completely ruined. The cylinder barrels may be able to be sleeved, but as we do have a spare engine I think that we will be using few parts from this one.
